The Barnsley Main Colliery site has not been easily accessible to visitors for a number of years. As a group we are working with Barnsley Council and the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership, thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, to change this.
A huge amount of volunteer time has been spent clearing the overgrowth and rubbish onsite which makes visiting a much more pleasant experience. A new site entrance has been installed providing improved pedestrian access.
Things to note:
- No building access is permitted. Please keep clear of the buildings at all times and enjoy them from a distance.
- As a former industrial site please take care when visiting. You are responsible for your own safety when onsite.
- Parking is not recommended on Oaks Lane. The nearest car park is at the Dearne Valley Country Park on Pontefract Road. This is just a short 5-10min walk away and takes you past the old pit cottages built in the 1850s for the Oaks Colliery.
- The site is well connected for walkers and cyclists via the Trans Pennine Trail, just a 5-10 minute walk away.
